THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The Cal Lutheran women's water polo team opened its annual Tina Finali Tournament in commanding fashion on Saturday afternoon, overpowering Wheaton College (Mass.) 26-1 at the Samuelson Aquatics Center.
The Regals wasted no time asserting control, exploding for 11 goals in the opening quarter and never looking back. Cal Lu tacked on six goals in the second and six more in the third to build a 23-0 cushion before the Lyons found the scoreboard late in the fourth.
Fourteen different Regals scored in the offensive showcase, with
Lauren Lohmeier leading the way with five goals and three assists for eight total points.
Kelsee Espitia matched her with an eight-point performance of her own, tallying one goal and seven assists to orchestrate the attack.
Jacqueline Brandon,
Olivia Hurley, and
Aleaha Gonzalez each registered hat tricks, while
Clarisa Robles and
Franki Court added two goals apiece.
Gabby Gillott,
Reyna Clark,
Hudson Geier,
Waileia Lee,
Jocelyn Cruz,
Chloe Gardhouse, and
Natalie Favazzo each contributed a goal to round out the scoring.
The Regals' defensive intensity matched its offensive onslaught, as CLU limited quality opportunities throughout and totaled 19 steals as a team. Court led the effort with four steals, Geier added three, and
Sophie Raquel anchored the cage with seven saves.
Cal Lutheran returns to action Sunday, February 15 at 2 p.m. against Concordia University Irvine as Tina Finali Tournament play continues in Thousand Oaks.
