TEMPE, Ariz. – Cal Lutheran women's water polo opened play at the Arizona State Invitational on Saturday, facing San Diego State and Fresno State on the first day of competition in Tempe.
GAME ONE: SAN DIEGO STATE 21, CAL LUTHERAN 1
The Regals kicked off the day against SDSU, dropping a 21-1 decision in the opening matchup.
The Aztecs struck quickly, scoring seven times in the first quarter and extending the lead to 13-1 at halftime.
Aleaha Gonzalez accounted for the Regals' lone goal midway through the opening period.
San Diego State maintained offensive pressure throughout the contest, finishing with 35 shots and 11 assists. Cal Lu recorded 19 shots and combined for six saves in goal from
Izzy de Souza and
Sophie Raquel.
Jocelyn Cruz,
Franki Court, and Gonzalez each added a steal on the defensive end.
GAME TWO: FRESNO STATE 22, CAL LUTHERAN 4
In the late contest, Fresno State earned a 22-4 win over the Regals.
Olivia Hurley led Cal Lutheran with a team-high three goals, scoring in three different quarters.
Jacqueline Brandon added a third-quarter goal, while
Hudson Geier and
Chloe Gardhouse each recorded an assist.
The Bulldogs built a 12-2 halftime advantage and continued to add goals in each quarter, finishing with 14 assists on 22 goals. The Regals totaled 18 shots and drew five exclusions.
De Souza and Raquel again split time in the cage, combining for nine saves against 36 Fresno State shots.
