Howie Named SCIAC Special Teams AOW

Kyle Howie, Cal Lutheran's veteran punter, was named SCIAC Special Teams Athlete of the Week (AOW) for his heroics in Saturday's season-opening victory over Pacific Lutheran.

While punters often neglect to receive the glory they deserve, Howie has reversed the norm as he adds to his impressive collection of accolades. He was named AOW in the first game last season as a precursor to his All-SCIAC Second Team nod in 2024.

He backed up that recognition with an outstanding performance against the Lutes, booting seven punts for a total of 323 yards (46.1 average) with one landing inside the 20-yard line and two going 50+ yards.

His highlight of the game occurred late in the fourth quarter, with the Kingsmen needing to protect a three point lead. Pacific Lutheran made a crucial third-down stop before the two-minute warning, so Howie and the punt team trotted out with the ball placed at the CLU 28-yard line.

Howie proceeded to mash the ball 57 yards, guiding it out of bounds at the Lutes' 15-yard line. The punt set up a game-winning defensive stand in which Pacific Lutheran ran out of time in Kingsmen territory.

Howie and Cal Lutheran will rest up this weekend before traveling up to Tacoma, WA to face Puget Sound on September 20.
