SALEM, Ore. – Cal Lutheran women's volleyball (3-1, 0-0) finished off the day at the Oregon Trail Classic with a four-set win over Willamette, taking the match 23-25, 25-21, 25-21, 27-25.
The Regals had to weather a slow start in the opening frame as the Bearcats led with a 10-2 advantage. Cal Lutheran responded with a 14-6 run to pull within 20-19, highlighted by kills from
Kennedy Smith and
Olivia Fernandes. The Regals fought off set point twice before Willamette (2-4, 0-0) secured the opening set, 25-23.
Cal Lutheran regrouped in the second set, battling back from an 18-12 deficit with a six-point run sparked by
Kaylee Clayton's service aces and kills from
Kennedy Smith and
Madeline Magnani. The Regals carried that momentum into the third, pulling ahead midway through and finishing strong with back-to-back kills from Smith to take both sets 25-21.
In the fourth, Cal Lutheran built an early lead at 16-12 behind a pair of kills from Clayton. Willamette fought back late, tying the set at 24-24, but the Regals held their composure. Magnani delivered a clutch kill, and
Alex Hayes and Magnani combined for a block on match point to seal the 27-25 victory.
Following the win, Cal Lutheran looks to keep the momentum going tomorrow against Pacific at the Lewis & Clark Invitational.
