CLAREMONT, Calif. – Cal Lutheran men's soccer faced Pomona-Pitzer on the road in its first SCIAC matchup of 2025, playing to a scoreless draw. The Kingsmen narrowly outshot the Sagehens 14-12 but neither team was able to hit the back of the net.
Cal Lutheran controlled the opening 20 minutes with four shots to the Sagehens' one, including an opening-minute shot on goal by
Caleb Merrill and two looks from
Max Scott, including a shot on goal that was saved by the Pomona-Pitzer keeper.
A pair of shots by
Maximo Schelotto in the final two minutes of the opening half were off target, and the Kingsmen and Sagehens headed into the half squared at nil. Cal Lutheran outshot Pomona-Pitzer seven to five and each team produced a couple of corner kicks.
Two more shots by Scott early in the second half were saved by the opposing keeper, and then the Sagehens were able to control the pace for a while. Kingsmen goalie
Isaak Tanaka made four straight saves to keep the Sagehens off the board, and
Kane Reese got off a pair of looks.
The final three shot attempts of the match came from Cal Lutheran, as
Jackson Endsley knocked two and
Gavin Arce had his shot saved with just over two minutes remaining.
Tanaka had an impressive game in front of the net, playing all 90 minutes and saving five shots without letting up a score. Scott led the Kingsmen with four shots and three shots on goal.
Cal Lutheran managed seven shots on goal to Pomona-Pitzer's six.
The Kingsmen will look to get back in the win column on Saturday evening at 7pm back in Claremont, this time hosted by CMS.
