SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – Cal Lutheran men's soccer (1-3-0, 0-0-0 SCIAC) faced off on the road against The Master's on Thursday evening in a match loaded with drama in the final minutes. The Kingsmen were down by one before tying it up in the 82nd minute. A pair of yellow cards ensued, resulting in a Cal Lutheran ejection, and The Master's took advantage to take the match 3-1.
The Kingsmen were in control early in the game, with four shots in the first 21 minutes, including two shots on goal by
Brendan Stafford and
Max Scott.
Jack Gominiak picked up an early yellow card in the 20th minute.
The Mustangs got off a few shots midway through the opening half but none made their way into the goal. Scott managed a couple more shots, one being saved by The Master's (1-1-1, 0-0-0 GSAC) keeper.
The match was scoreless at the half.
The Master's opened up the second half with a bang, converting a goal in the 52nd minute to break the match open.
From the 60th to 80th minutes, the Kingsmen mustered five shots to the Mustang's zero, but The Master's held up on defense time and time again.
In the 82nd minute, some quality passing by
Jack Gominiak and
Shaw Nishizawa led to a
Tika Kakimoto goal to tie the game at one apiece.
Shortly after in the 84th minute, some scuffling between the teams took place as
Danny Rodriguez and Gominiak received yellow cards, with Gominiak's being his second of the game and therefore an ejection.
The Master's capitalized, scoring goals in the 88th and 89th minutes to claim the victory.
The Kingsmen were able to outshoot the Mustangs, with 16 shots (7 on goal) to 13 (5 on goal). Scott attempted four while
Jackson Endsley led the team with five shots. Kakimoto scored his goal in just 19 minutes on the pitch.
Goalies
Anthony Sound and
Isaak Tanaka rotated with Tanaka drawing the start and Sound relieving him in the 71st minute. Each had one save.
Cal Lutheran will look to regroup in its first SCIAC game of 2025 on the road against Pomona-Pitzer on September 17.
