ALISO VIEJO, Calif. – Cal Lutheran Kingsmen soccer (1-0, 0-0) tallied its first win of the season, defeating Soka University (0-1-1, 0-0) 3-1 in the team's season opener on Saturday.
The win marked Cal Lutheran's seventh straight opener without a loss, going 6-0-1 in that span.
The Kingsmen came out firing, putting a ball in the back of the net in the ninth minute courtesy of the boot of
Alejandro Loza. Loza is coming off of a strong season for the Kingsmen, one that saw him finish second on the team in goals and points scored.
Soka countered about ten minutes later, evening the score at one apiece in the 19th minute, the last goal scored of the first half.
On the stat sheet, the match was very even at halftime. The teams had the same amount of shots, while Cal Lu had one more save, one fewer corner, and two more corners.
It took only two minutes into the second half for Cal Lu to regain the lead, when
Danny Rodriguez netted an unassisted goal. Neither team would score until the 72nd minute when
Owen Niu provided some pivotal insurance with an unassisted goal of his own. The goals marked the first of their careers for each Rodriguez, a senior, and Niu, a sophomore.
The Kingsmen are back in action on Friday afternoon, traveling to Colorado Springs to face Colorado College.
