CLAREMONT, Calif. – Cal Lutheran women's tennis competed against top-seeded Pomona-Pitzer on Wednesday evening in the SCIAC Tournament Semifinals. The Regals lost 4-0 in a match that was deemed over immediately after the Sagehens clinched.
The Regals entered the conference tournament as the #4-seed, traveling to Pomona-Pitzer who went undefeated in the SCIAC in the regular season and earned a top-5 ranking in the nation.
Kicking off the doubles matches,
Anya Rajan/
Luisa Garcia dropped their set 6-1 in the #3 spot. In the #2 spot,
Kylee Limpias/
Evelyn Oltmans toughed out a gutsy 6-3 win to tie up the team doubles count, 1-1.
Mina Ahmadi/
Carmen Bufkin were locked in a battle in the #1 spot, but they ultimately fell 6-4 as the Sagehens claimed the team doubles point.
In singles, the Regals sent out a lineup #1-6 of Bufkin, Rajan,
Gerda Jucys, Limpias, Garcia, and Oltmans.
Jucys and Limpias both lost their matches 6-0, 6-1 before Rajan dropped her match 6-0, 6-2. Since the winner would have a quick turnaround with the SCIAC Championship on Friday, the teams agreed to halt the match once a team clinched the victory. Bufkin, Garcia, and Oltmans played unfinished matches.
At the time of clinching, Oltmans had just won the second set to extend the match, an impressive feat for the first-year player from Colorado as she ended her season on a high note.
Seniors Bufkin, Ahmadi, Garcia, and Jucys finish their careers on the heels of one of the most successful seasons in the program's past 10 years. Bufkin will await to see if she is chosen to represent Cal Lutheran in the NCAA Championships as an individual.
