Regals Win One in Trio of Pitchers' Duels

Cal Lutheran softball took on Claremont-M-S on Friday and Saturday, stealing game one on the road before dropping games two and three at home to give the Athenas the series win.

GAME ONE: CAL LUTHERAN 3, CMS 1 (9 INN.)
The Regals (13-7, 5-3 SCIAC) played their first extra-inning contest of the season in the series opener, defeating CMS (15-7, 6-3) in the top of the ninth.

Ashlyn Flinchum (5-2) went the distance on the mound for Cal Lutheran, allowing just four hits and striking out four Athenas in the complete game.

The Regals tallied ten hits to push three runs across for the win. CMS struck first in the second inning, scoring one on a Cal Lu fielding error, but the Regals immediately responded in the next frame with an RBI single off the bat of Abby Strong.

The teams stayed tied at one until the top of the ninth, where CMS errors would prove to be costly. With speedy Brooke Strahm on first, a Nadia Collins sac bunt would move her over and a single from Reyna Perez would bring her home, giving the Regals a 2-1 lead.

Perez made it to third base on a throwing error by the Athenas, allowing Brooke DeSmet to score her on a sac bunt of her own, making it a 3-1 game.

Flinchum quickly closed out the contest in the bottom of the ninth and the Regals traveled home with a win under their belts.

GAME TWO: CMS 2, CAL LUTHERAN 0
The Athenas gave the Regals a taste of their own medicine in game two, out-hitting them 8-3 for the shutout victory.

Ally Forbell (3-4) spent six innings in the circle for Cal Lu before Flinchum made an appearance in the top of the seventh. The duo combined for three strikeouts and just two walks.

The Regals' offense struggled to back Forbell, as only four runners made it into scoring position. Dani Diaz, Jessica Waters, and Collins had one hit each while DeSmet and Mia Antonino both drew a walk apiece.

GAME THREE: CMS 2, CAL LUTHERAN 1
Another pitchers' duel was the story of game three, continuing on with the theme of the weekend. This time, Kalli Strahm (2-1) got the ball for the Regals and battled hard as she took her first loss of the year.

Cal Lutheran was first to get on the board as Strong brought home Waters in the second inning, but the Regals remained scoreless after that, unable to answer the call of Claremont's lineup.

Perez was 2-4 in the nightcap, and DeSmet and Diaz both contributed a hit and a walk each.
