THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. –
Danielle Diaz and
Ashlyn Flinchum were the heroes on Friday afternoon as Cal Lutheran softball silenced Whittier in game one of the SCIAC series.
Flinchum (6-2) had a stellar outing as she threw her sixth complete game and first shutout of the season. The senior allowed just six hits and one walk while fanning six Poets, including a huge backwards K for her 150th career strikeout.
Diaz got the Regals on the board in the bottom of the first with a triple down the right field line, marking the first three-bagger of her career. She brought home
Olivia Vargas who singled to right for the first Cal Lu hit of the game.
It would be a scoreless pitchers' battle through the rest of the contest until Diaz broke through with another triple in the bottom of the sixth, landing in almost the exact same spot as her first. This time she brought around
Brooke DeSmet, who got the inning started with a single up the middle before getting moved over by a Vargas sac bunt.
A base hit from Whittier opened up the top of the seventh, but Flinchum shut down the next three-straight batters to wrap up Cal Lutheran's win.
The victory brings the Regals to 14-7 overall and 6-3 in conference play, landing them in the number three spot of the SCIAC standings. They'll continue the weekend series with a doubleheader at Whittier tomorrow, beginning at 12 PM.
