ORANGE, Calif. – Regals lacrosse suffered a tough blow, losing 14-13 on a late goal to Chapman on Saturday afternoon.
Malina Diaz added to her spectacular senior season, netting seven goals. Her 3.63 goal-per-game average leads the SCIAC.
Chapman (6-9, 4-6) got the scoring started, but Cal Lutheran (6-10, 2-9) countered with two goals of its own. The Panthers tied it at 2, but Diaz gave the Regals the lead with under a minute remaining in the period. Chapman answered with inside thirty seconds to go to send the game to the second period tied 3-3.
Three quick goals between the squads saw Chapman take a 5-4 lead, before a five-minute scoring drought was broken by a goal from
Meghan Angus, quickly followed by another Diaz goal to give the Regals a 6-5 lead with under four minutes remaining in the half.
The Panthers would parry with a pair of goals inside the two-minute mark to send the game to halftime 7-6 Chapman.
Diaz got the scoring started in the second half 52 seconds in, tying the game at 7. A Chapman goal was answered 35 seconds later by
Josie Oparanaku, tying the game at 8.
Four minutes after Chapman retook the lead, it was first-year
Nicki-Jean Henderson who evened the score back up at 9, just her third goal of her collegiate career. A minute later, Angus followed with a goal of her own to send the contest to the fourth period 11-10 in the Regals' favor.
Chapman cashed two goals over the first seven minutes of the period, tilting the game 12-11 Panthers.
Two Diaz goals over the next two minutes helped the Regals retake the lead inside the two minute mark, but a game-tying goal and the game-winner with 0:14 left on the clock ultimately knocked off the Regals in heartbreaking fashion.
The Regals will end their season of program highs at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 26 as they take on Occidental in William Rolland Stadium.
