Regals Lose Tough Battle To Redlands

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – Cal Lutheran women's lacrosse fought hard, but a tough second half saw the Regals fall 11-17 to Redlands on Saturday afternoon.

It was a quiet first half for both squads, with only 12 combined goals at half time.

A tit-for-tat contest between the Regals (6-8, 2-7) and the Bulldogs early, Redlands (10-4, 6-3) struck first as it jumped out to a 3-1 lead with seven minutes left to play in the first period. A pair of goals from Josie Oparanaku at the end of the period evened the contest at three apiece.

The Bulldogs got the scoring started in the second period too, scoring a pair of goals. Cal Lutheran answered in a flash, tying the game in just a minute of game time.

After a six minute scoring drought, Redlands retook the lead only to be answered by the Regals a minute later, sending the game to halftime even at 6-6.

The Bulldogs came out of the break firing, rattling off a trio of goals to recapture the lead. They kept their foot on the gas this time, not letting the Regals cut the lead to fewer than two en route to their 10th win, the second SCIAC team to do so this season.

Bright spots for the Regals included three players: Oparanaku, Malina Diaz, and Madison Soforenko, notching hat tricks with a shooting percentage of almost 60%.

Diaz continued her dominant senior season, one that has seen her rank top three in the conference in goals per game, points per game, and draw controls. Soforenko and Oparanaku rank top ten in goals per game, with the latter also ranking in draw controls.

The Regals will look to finish their historic season on a high note in their final three games, with two on the road and their season finale in William Rolland Stadium. They will travel to Claremont to take on #16 Pomona-Pitzer at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 16.
