THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – Cal Lutheran women's water polo went back-and-forth through all four quaters in a hard-fought game, but was edged out by the Chapman Panthers by a score of 13-14.
Chloe Garhouse scored the first goal of the contest before Chapman responded with two back-to-back goals.
Katie Knight then tied the game at two, but the Panthers scored a last-minute goal to take a 3-2 lead after the first quarter.
Hudson Geier scored just seconds into the second quarter, but Chapman regained its one-point lead. Geier and Knight would then score two unanswered goals to put the Regals ahead 5-4.
Bethany Metcalfe and Knight slotted two more in the back of the net to help Cal Lutheran win the quarter and tie the match at the half.
The Regals took a two-goal lead at the start of the third with goals from Metcalfe and
Megan Findlay. The Panthers then went on a three-goal run to regain the advantage, 10-9. Knight found the cage again at the end of the quarter, but the Regals found themselves down by one.
Champan and Cal Lutheran went goal-for-goal twice to start the final quarter before Gardhouse tied it up at 13 near the end. The Regals' comeback was not enough as the Panthers netted a last-second goal to take the game.
Izzy de Souza had another outstanding game in goal with 13 saves and a save percentage of .600, while Knight continued to be an offensive force with four goals. Geier, Metcalfe, and Gardhouse each added two more and
Miranda Miller tallied two assists.
The Regals move to 1-1 in SCIAC play and will look to rebound at CMS on Wednesday, March 12 at 7:00 p.m.
