Oparanaku Dominates as Regals Get Back In Win Column

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – Three Regals tallied at least five points as Cal Lutheran women's lacrosse took down Albion 16-13 at home on Wednesday night.

It was a birthday to remember for junior Josie Oparanaku, who tallied a season-high five goals. Senior captains Meghan Angus and Malina Diaz had big nights too, tallying six and five points respectively.

It was a dominant start for the Regals (2-3, 1-3) who scored two goals in the first two minutes. They jumped out to an early 7-3 lead, including a quick hat trick for Oparanaku, before a three goal run by the Britons (1-2, 0-0) made it a one-point game to end the first period.

A 3-1 second period that saw a pair of goals from Diaz would send the game to half with Cal Lu up 10-7.

With the Regals leading 12-8 in the second half, Albion would net three unanswered goals to end the third period and one to begin the fourth to even things at 12.

A 4-1 stretch by Cal Lutheran capped off the Regals second win of the season, both of which came in front of a home crowd. The contest marked the first for the Regals this season to end by a margin of fewer than 10 in either direction.

The Regals were outshot 28-20, but 15 saves from junior goalie Bella Bravo gave the Regals the narrow win.

"I saw the team as a whole come together and rise under pressure at the end of the game. We've been working hard in practice on building good habits and those habits came through when we needed them most," Head Coach MacEllen McDonough said.

Cal Lutheran is back in action at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 8 at home against Alfred.
