The Cal Lutheran baseball team fell in a tight battle at Occidental College on Friday before sweeping the Tigers at home on Saturday to secure the series win.
GAME ONE: OCCIDENTAL 6, CAL LUTHERAN 5
The Kingsmen captured an early lead with two runs in the first inning.
Josh Quinn hit an RBI single to score
Alec Garcia and
Kai Caranto reached first base on an error allowing
Sebastian Smith to score.Â
The Tigers tied it up in the bottom of the first and second innings, but a
Lucas Danielewicz homerun in the fifth gave Cal Lutheran a 3-2 lead.
The Kingsmen increased their advantage in the sixth with a sacrifice fly from Smith and a
Wyatt Crosby single, allowing
Carlos Vega to touch home, but the Tigers responded with four more runs throughout the rest of the game to give them a 6-5 win.
Seven different Kingsmen recorded hits in the contest, featuring Danielewicz's homerun.Â
GAME TWO: CAL LUTHERAN 7, OCCIDENTAL 6
The Tigers took a 2-0 lead in the second inning, but a Danielewicz sac fly to left-center field chipped off one run for the Kingsmen. Occidental increased its lead in the fourth inning with a two-RBI single.
Cal Lutheran was unphased and took the lead in the sixth. Smith smoked an RBI single to the outfield with the bases loaded to cut the score to 2-4.
Noah Matsumoto, Quinn, and Smith all scored and capitalized on mistakes by the Tigers' pitcher to make it a 5-4 ballgame.Â
The Kingsmen and Occidental went back and forth in the seventh and eighth innings. The Tigers regained the lead in the top of the seventh with two RBI singles before Matsumoto hit a clutch single up the middle to drive in
Zach Gardner to tie the game. The winning run was scored by Smith in the eighth when Danielewicz reached on an error from the Tigers' third baseman.
Leo Bristow got the start and struck out six Tigers over five innings, and
Caleb Wilson held it down with one and one-third scoreless innings.
Oscar Lopez closed out the game and did not allow a hit for the final two and two-thirds innings.
Matsumoto had a monster game going 3-3 on the day and drove in a crucial run for the Kingsmen.
GAME THREE: CAL LUTHERAN 6, OCCIDENTAL 0
In the second game of the day, the Kingsmen finished with a dominant win led by starting pitcher
Frank Willius. He kept the Tigers' offense guessing all game, striking out a career-high 15 batters through seven scoreless innings.
Danielewicz picked up right where he left off in the sixth with an RBI double to open the scoring for Cal Lutheran. Another double from
Jona Dawson in the sixth drove in two more for the Kingsmen, increasing their lead to 3-0.
Danielewicz earned another RBI with a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning. Cal Lutheran was able to add some insurance runs in the eighth thanks to a balk allowing
Ethan Dungo to touch home, and Smith added the last run with an RBI single.
Smith had two hits and five more Kingsmen recorded at least one. Danielewicz and Dawson also chimed in with two RBI each.
The Kingsmen have now picked up their sixth-straight series win and will look to take their momentum into their game against Linfield at home on Thursday, March 27, at 3:00 p.m.
