Kingsmen Fall to Royals in Five

FULLERTON, Calif. – Cal Lutheran men's volleyball had its four-game win streak snapped by Hope International on Tuesday night, falling to the Royals 25-16, 22-25, 29-31, 25-21, 10-15.

It was a hard-fought battle for the Kingsmen as they took HIU to five sets, their first match in 30 days to go more than three.

Ben Weber and Michael Stahl led the Cal Lu offense, both hitting over .320 with 19 kills each. The attack was maneuvered by Gavin Galanski's career-high 49 assists.

On defense, Borys Horiuk led with four total blocks and Braden Gonzales and Galanski both tallied a team-high 14 digs each.

The Kingsmen capitalized early, taking a 5-1 lead in the first set. Later on, Horiuk would serve back-to-back aces to make it 22-13 in favor of Cal Lutheran, and Stahl would end the set with a kill.

The Royals held the momentum in the second and third sets before the Kingsmen rallied to take the fourth. Cal Lu would open the set with five-straight points and there was no sign of a comeback for HIU, sending the game to the fifth.

Down by four in the final set, the Kingsmen would take their second timeout which allowed Stahl to get something going with back-to-back kills. The Royals would respond with four more, interrupted by one last attack from Jordan Cooper, to ultimately take the set and the match.

Cal Lutheran looks to bounce back quickly with another contest on Thursday night. No. 14 Hobart College will pay a visit to Gilbert Arena at 6 PM for the Kingsmen's sixth match up with a ranked Division III opponent this season.
