Regals Beat Austin and Battle Villanova

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The Regals continued their play in the Convergence Tournament today with a win over the Austin College Kangaroos and a tight finish against a Division I opponent, the Villanova Wildcats.

Austin 9, Cal Lutheran 13
With a win over Austin, the Regals started the tournament 3-0 and looked dominant in the pool. 

Hudson Geier was constantly an offensive threat all tournament and started the scoring with a power-play goal in the first quarter. Another main scorer in the tournament, Jacqueline Brandon had two goals in the first, followed by a goal each from Katie Knight and Megan Findlay. The Regals led 5-2 at the end of the first period. The Regals led 7-4 at the half as Knight put the ball past the goalie two more times in the second quarter.

Cal Lutheran added four more goals in the third quarter, with one from Knight and a hat-trick from Miranda Miller. The Regals finished their 13-9 victory with goals from Findlay and Gianna Garcia in the fourth quarter.

Knight led the scoring with four goals, while Miller, Brandon, and Findlay also had multi-goal games. 

Villanova 13, Cal Lutheran 10
The Regals proved themselves as they fought against a tough Villanova team.

Cal Lutheran found itself in a 4-1 hole at the end of the first quarter with a goal from Tori Portillo. Miller, Knight, and Bethany Metcalfe added to the Regals' total, but four more goals from the Wildcats put Cal Lutheran down 8-4 at the half.

The Regals turned things around in the second half with goals from Knight, Miller, and Geier in the third quarter. Cal Lutheran cut Villanova's lead to just three heading into the fourth quarter. Metcalfe fired a shot to the back of the cage to make the score 10-8. Knight and Geier added two more goals in the fourth, but it was not enough as the Regals lost 13-10. 

Regals' goalie Izzy de Souza was a brick wall in goal as she saved 16 total shots to keep Cal Lutheran treading water. Knight had another extraordinary performance with three goals, and Miller, Geier, and Metcalfe had two goals each. Metcalfe additionally assisted on two goals. 

With a 3-1 record against stout competition, the Regals are in a prime position and ready for SCIAC play. Cal Lutheran will kick off its conference schedule at Whittier on Wednesday, March 5, at 7:00 p.m.
