THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The Kingsmen won their fifth series in a row and took the last game of the series against the Middlebury Panthers, 10-1. The pitching and hitting were both in sync again to produce another blowout victory.
Kai Caranto kicked things off with a sacrifice fly, scoring
Wyatt Crosby for an early 1-0 Cal Lutheran lead. In the second inning,
Zach Gardner stayed scorching hot with a home run to dead-center field for a 2-0 lead.
Frank Willius started the game and pitched the first five innings, allowing just one hit and striking out nine Panthers.
In the bottom half of the fifth inning, Caranto cashed in
Noah Matsumoto with another sac-fly. In the sixth, a crucial throw-away error from the Middlebury pitcher allowed Gardner and
Sebastian Smith to increase the Kingsmen's advantage to 5-0.
Lucas Danielewicz roped a double down the left field line in the seventh to drive in Caranto and
Alec Garcia. Soon after,
Ethan Dungo was able to touch home on a fielder's choice from Gardner.
Cal Lutheran closed things out in the eighth with two runs.
Carlos Vega scored the first run of the inning on an error from the Panthers' second baseman and the tenth run of the game was scored by Caranto from an RBI single by Dungo.
Daniel Orozco and
Matt Campo relieved Willius and finished the Panthers. Orozco had three strikeouts over two innings pitched.
The Kingsmen are now 13-4 on the season and will resume SCIAC play with a three-game set at Occidental beginning this Friday, March 21, at 3:00 p.m.
