TACOMA, Wash. – Eight Regals scored as Cal Lutheran defeated Pacific Lutheran 25-2, its largest win in program history, on Tuesday evening.
Records galore were broken for the Regals (4-3, 1-3), as the win saw junior midfielder
Sydney Shin set a new program single-game assists mark (5) and the team set new program highs in goals scored (25) and margin of victory (23). It also marked the first three-game winning streak in program history.
The game saw sophomore
Miya Avila record the first multi-goal game of her career and first-year
Nicki-Jean Henderson record the first goal of her collegiate career.
The Lutes (1-3, 0-0) struck first, but the Regals would answer with 11-straight goals by six different players to close out the first period.
Pacific Lutheran would score the first goal of the second period as well, before Cal Lutheran would net six straight, capped off by a buzzer-beater by
Madison Soforenko to send the Regals into the half up 17-2.
"Tonight was amazing, I'm very pleased with my performance. Everyone and everything was just firing on all cylinders," Soforenko said.
Soforenko specifically highlighted the young players, noting first-year goalie
Shea Simpson's second-half shutout and Avila's strong play.
"The future is bright for this team. I was just happy to contribute to a great win," Soforenko said.
It was the same story in the second half as the Regals would put up eight more unanswered en route to a statement victory.
"Feels awesome to be on a winning streak. We saw some younger players step up and make an impact on the game; it was a great team win," Head Coach
MacEllen McDonough said.
The Regals will look to extend their winning streak in Tacoma against Puget Sound on Saturday, March 15 at 11 a.m.
