KERRVILLE, Tex. – Cal Lutheran men's and women's golf traveled to Texas last week to compete in the Schreiner Shoot-Out at the par-72 Comanche Trace golf course. What was supposed to be a two-day tournament ended up being shortened to a single round due to severe winds making the course unplayable for the final round. Both the Kingsmen and Regals finished second overall and first out of Division III programs. Individually,
Blake Fitzhugh landed in second place while
Ashley Zook took seventh.
In a shotgun start on Monday's Round 1, the Kingsmen were led by senior duo Fitzhugh and
Adam Cartozian. Fitzhugh only bogeyed two holes on the day while sinking five birdies, three coming on par-5s. He would finish with a 33 on the back nine to propel him to a 3-under finish in the round. Cartozian birdied the par-5 hole 5, but three bogeys on the ensuing eight holes had him sitting at 2-over through 11 holes. He would eagle the 523-yard par 5 hole 12 before consecutive birdies on holes 15 and 16. That hot stretch would be enough for him to pull out a 71 on the day, joining Fitzhugh under par.
Hudson Solters ended at 6-over with one birdie while
Tanner Stewart and
Jackson Stitt finished at 7-over with four birdies and one birdie, respectively. The Kingsmen would finish with a team score of 9-over to place second in the tournament, only behind Division-II Odessa.
Nick Huffman and
Ty Kuroda joined the trip as independents, with Huffman recording a 77 and Kuroda a 78.
The Regals took part in the simultaneous shotgun start on Monday morning, beginning on various holes in the back nine. A windy day saw the Regals finish with a lower amount of birdies than usual, but rarely anything worse than a bogey.
Zook birdied the par-4 hole 15 en route to a 78 on the day, with no double bogeys or worse.
Caroline Morris birdied hole 13 as part of her 8-over round.
Anna Poulin couldn't sink a birdie but knocked in 10 pars and eight bogeys to join Morris with an 80.
Kaylie Hesse led the team with two birdies on a couple par 4s on her way to an 81. The Regals would finish with a team score of 31-over to place second in the tournament, also only behind Division-II Odessa.
Brooke Alderson had one birdie in her 83, while
Maya Dela Rama competed as an independent, downing two birdies on a couple par 3s as she joined Alderson at 83 on the day.
The cancellation of Round 2 came at an unfortunate time for Cal Lutheran, as about half of the day's golf had already been completed when the decision was made. Fitzhugh had overtaken the individual men's tournament lead with a strong start on Tuesday morning, while Morris was having a fantastic encore at Comanche Trace for the women.
Both the Kingsmen and Regals tee off next in home tournaments hosted by Cal Lutheran. The Kingsmen and Regal Invitationals take place on Monday, March 10 and Tuesday, March 11 at Moorpark Country Club.
