THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. –
Madison Soforenko set a new program record as the Regals tallied their first win of the season, 17-3, against Whittier on Wednesday night.
The story lines wrote themselves for Cal Lutheran women's lacrosse on Wednesday. The win marked the Regals' first win of the season, their first true home game since Apr. 26, 2023, the first win for new head coach
MacEllen McDonough, and it saw sophomore
Madison Soforenko set a new program record in goals (7) and points (10) in a single game.
McDonough said her first win was especially sweet since they were able to get it done in front of the home crowd.
"Very excited for the team! And it means more for it to be our home opener on our new turf," McDonough said.
Soforenko, a sophomore midfielder, was the Regals' second-leading point-getter last season. She was held pointless in the team's season opener but exploded on Wednesday, with six of those goals coming in the first half.
"It was a great feeling. Everyone was getting involved and connected on the field. Everything was clicking for us tonight," Soforenko said.
Captain
Sydney Shin had a big game too, notching four goals of her own and starting the scoring 15 seconds into the game.
Shin, the Regals leading stat-getter almost across the board, was the field general all game for Cal Lutheran–always at the top of the arc and always seeming to be open as a fall back when no one else was.
It was all Regals from the jump, as the team followed Shin's quick goal with four more to bring it to 5-0 with over 10 minutes left in the first period.
Josie Oparanaku ended the period with a bang, netting two goals in 20 seconds.
The Regals would keep their foot on the gas, cashing six more goals to take a 14-0 lead into halftime.
Sophomore
Miya Avila would net her first goal of the season coming out of the break which, paired with an earlier assist, gives her the first multipoint game of her career.
The Regals are back in action at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 26 at Redlands.
