CLAREMONT, Calif. – Alline Ballard scored with less than one second left to send Cal Lutheran women's basketball home with a win over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 57-55.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After the Athenas (9-15, 5-10 SCIAC) jumped out to a two-point advantage after the first quarter, the Regals (18-6, 10-5 SCIAC) lit up the floor in the second and third quarters, hitting 66.7% of their shots over those 20 minutes. At the start of the fourth quarter, the Regals led 50-40.
The Athenas had their strongest quarter of the ballgame and nearly snatched victory from the jaws of defeat, but the Regals hung on.
With the Regals up 55-47 with 3:04 to go, a layup from CMS's Ruva Kiara sparked an 8-0 Athenas run, tying the game at 55-55 with 24 seconds to go.
A foul put the ball on the baseline out of bounds with five seconds on the clock. Kaiya Mack inbounded it to Ballard in the post who drove to her right and layed in the game-winner.
