THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – Cal Lutheran men's basketball came up huge, taking down Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 68-63 on Wednesday night.
The contest marked the second lowest scoring game of the season for the Kingsmen, and their lowest scoring win.
It was a game with big implications for Cal Lutheran (20-4,13-2) and CMS (17-7,11-4), as the teams sit among the top three in the SCIAC standings.
Devon Lewis' team-high 18 points marks the second lowest single-game high in a Cal Lu win this season.
The squads traded blows early as two
Matthew Verkamp free throws gave the Kingsmen a 14-12 lead going into a media timeout.
Although close, with Cal Lutheran never leading by more than nine, the Stags would be held at bay until the 10:31 mark in the second half when an 11-2 run put them up one.
A three by
Nick Attanasio would put the Kingsmen back ahead, after which they would never relinquish the lead again.
After two free throws by the Stags to tie it up, senior
Jake Martin would cash a three to put Cal Lutheran back in front.
Two free throws from Drew Pipersburgh would fortify the Kingsmen's 20th win of the year, keeping them within a game of Redlands for the SCIAC crown.
Cal Lutheran has been one of the best teams in the conference at defending the three-point line, and it was on full display as the Kingsmen stifled CMS to just 2-12 from beyond the arc.
Cal Lutheran will close out the regular season at Caltech on Saturday, Feb. 22 at 7 p.m.
