Kingsmen Handle Business, Set Records On Senior Day

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – Cal Lutheran men's basketball sent its seniors off into the sunset in style, handling Whittier 97-77 on Saturday night.

The Kingsmen honored their nine seniors before the game: Stephen Davis, Taj Regans, Miles Griffin, Nick Attanasio, Devon Lewis, Desi Burrage, Ryan Hoffman, Jake Martin, and Tommy Griffitts.

Every senior was presented with a framed jersey along with photo ops with both their families and Head Coach Russell White at half-court.

"I hope I mean as much to them as they mean to me. It's been very fun building the program with these guys. They deserve all the credit," White said.

The Kingsmen followed up a decisive upset by Regals basketball in their own senior night minutes before, who handed Whittier its first SCIAC loss of the season.

The Kingsmen have had continuous success from beyond the arc this season, leading the SCIAC in 3-pointers made, attempted, and 3-point percentage coming into the contest. It was on full display tonight as the Kingsmen cashed a team record 21 threes, shattering the old mark of 17, a record held for 34 years.

The Kingsmen converted at a dominant rate in the paint as well, tallying 35 total field goals, their highest single-game total in two years.

A crowd of over 400, the largest of the season, littered with student-athletes, families, and alumni, created an electric atmosphere inside Gilbert Arena.

It was a bumpy start for Cal Lu, who found themselves up just one. Coming out of a media timeout, the Kingsmen would take control, going on a 26-8 run to put the Kingsmen up big. They would then account for 10 of the half's last 12 points and go into the break up 21.

Midway through the second half, Regans sank three threes in a minute-and-a-half span, sending Gilbert Arena ballistic.

With under two minutes to go and the game out of reach, Coach White would pull all his seniors. This would open the door for junior Luke Varechok to tally the first points of his collegiate career.

Sophomore Camden Hyde would then weave defenders and convert a commanding layup, missing a dunk by inches.

Davis, the team's floor general and assists leader this season, called the team a brotherhood, saying this season was the best he could've asked for.

"Being a Kingsman means everything. To be able to come into my fifth year and cap it off like this is all I've ever wanted," Davis said.

It was a sentiment echoed by Burrage, who said Coach White's biggest stressor to the team was about the culture and the camaraderie.

"We play for each other. It's just us five playing out there, and that's what success is. That's what it looked like tonight. We were playing together, we were playing free," Burrage said.

The Kingsmen will take on Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in the squad's home finale at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, February 19.
