THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – Cal Lutheran baseball was victorious in its 2025 season-opener, defeating George Fox 7-4 on Friday evening at Sparky Anderson Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Starting pitcher Luke Wechsler picked right where he left off in the 2024 season, tossing 6.0 innings to pick up the win.
The Bruins struck first, scoring runs in the top of the first and second innings before the Kingsmen got on the board in their half of the second.
After Carlos Vega smacked a one-out single, Eric Gonzalez laid down a perfect bunt, putting pressure on the defense and reaching on an error. Josh Quinn singled to load the bases and Jona Dawson drove in Vega with a sacrifice fly for the first Kingsmen run. The Kingsmen weren't finished yet, as Kai Caranto followed it up with a double to drive in Gonzalez while Alec Garcia plated two more runs with an RBI single.
The Bruins answered in the top of the third with a two-RBI double to knot it back up, 4-4. With two outs and a runner on second, Wechsler notched his second strikeout of the game to get the Kingsmen back in the dugout. Wechsler settled in and showed out his next three innings of work, allowing just two baserunners while fanning three over that stretch.
In the fifth, the Kingsmen retook the lead and would hold it for the rest of the ballgame. Zach Gardner reached second base thanks to a throwing error from the Bruins pitcher and Vega knocked him in with a single to give the Kingsmen a 5-4 advantage.
Lucas Danielewicz claimed the first homer of the 2025 season for the purple and gold, smashing a solo shot to left field in the seventh inning. In the eighth, Garcia recorded his game-high third RBI, adding another insurance run for the Kingsmen, making the score 7-4.
Joshua Kim took the ball from Wechsler in the seventh inning and contributed a clean 2.0 innings of relief while Frank Willius shut down the Bruins in the final frame to pick up the save.
