THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — Cal Lutheran men's water polo (11-10, 4-5 SCIAC) delivered a dominant all-around performance Saturday morning, defeating Caltech (6-16, 0-9 SCIAC) 21-6 at home.
Before the match, the Kingsmen honored seven seniors–
Bo DuBois,
Tre Eade,
Zachary Isaac,
Nic Mastropoalo,
Brody Swarm,
Jude Solis, and
Jack Bradbury.
Cal Lutheran set the tone early with a fast-paced opening quarter. Bradbury put the Kingsmen on the board first with a goal at the 5:34 mark, followed by
Dylan Villanueva less than two minutes later. After Caltech briefly answered, Swarm took control, scoring back-to-back goals in the final minutes of the frame to give CLU a 4-1 lead after one.
The Kingsmen continued their offensive rhythm in the second quarter, outscoring the Beavers 5-1.
Max Gerdeman converted a penalty to start the run, and
Ceasar Nava followed with another goal. After Caltech scored midway through the quarter, CLU surged again with strikes from
Levi Cook, Isaac, and DuBois 3 seconds before halftime. The Kingsmen entered the break with a 9-2 advantage.
Cal Lutheran's momentum carried into the second half as Nava caught fire, scoring four of his five total goals in the third period alone.
Noah Carreon and Solis also found the back of the net, extending the lead to 15-4 heading into the final quarter.
The Kingsmen closed out the game with another strong frame, adding four more goals. Mastropoalo struck early, followed by tallies from Eade, Bradbury, and Carreon, who completed his hat trick. Swarm finished the scoring with his third of the day in the final seconds, sealing the 21-6 victory.
Overall, Cal Lutheran outshot Caltech 38-28 and recorded 16 assists on 21 goals. Nava led all scorers with five goals, while Carreon and Swarm each added three.
The Kingsmen will host Pomona-Pitzer in their next SCIAC matchup on Wednesday.
