Kingsmen Water Polo Wins Nailbiter for Third Straight

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Cal Lutheran men's water polo (6-6) won its third-straight game, narrowly beating Mount St. Mary's (6-15) 13-12.

The Kingsmen, who started the season 0-3, have since been able to get to .500 about halfway through the season.

The game was the third of four the Kingsmen will play in the Gary Troyer Tournament, hosted by fellow SCIAC member Occidental.

After the Kingsmen struck first, the Mountaineers scored a trio of goals to take a 3-1 lead, but the Kingsmen were able to even the score at 3 before the half.

The game was won for the Kingsmen in the third quarter, as they went on a 4-0 run to open the half, eventually tacking on two more to head into the fourth quarter up 11-9. Each team would trade blows in the fourth, and Mount St. Mary cut the lead to one with just north of two minutes to play, but the Kingsmen were able to hold them off in their third-straight win.

Paul Patterson led the scoring with 3, while Nic Mastropoalo had 2 and eight Kingsmen had 1.

Goalie Jacob Taff grabbed 6 saves and 4 steals in the net.

The Kingsmen will look to be above .500 as they finish up the Troyer Tournament at 2 p.m. on October 4.
