LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Cal Lutheran men's water polo (7-6, 0-1) has a winning record for the first time this season as they beat Fresno Pacific University (4-10, 0-0) 15-11.
The Kingsmen entered the Gary Troyer Tournament in Los Angeles 3-6, but ran the table in all four games they played to improve to 7-6.
This is also the second time Cal Lutheran has beaten Fresno Pacific this season, as they played two weeks prior and won 18-13.
After going down 3-1 early, the Kingsmen ended on a 4-1 stretch to head into the second period up 5-4.
Cal Lutheran got the scoring started in the second period but a pair of Sunbird goals evened the score at 6 apiece. A pair of Kingsmen goals inside two minutes sent the game into halftime with Cal Lutheran up two.
It was more of the same for the Kingsmen in the second half, as the Sunbirds never pulled to within more than two to secure a fourth straight victory for Cal Lutheran.
Alan Castillo led the charge with 5 goals, while
Levi Cook and
Paul Patterson each tallied 4 and
Brody Swarm added 2. The Kingsmen's balanced scoring and consistent performance throughout the match kept them ahead.
Around two minutes into the game,
Jaeger Gonzales took over in the net for Bo Dubois, effectively marking Gonzalez' second start of the season. Gonzalez made the most of it, nabbing 13 saves with a save percentage of .600.
The Kingsmen are back in action at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, October 8 as they head on the road to take on Pomona-Pitzer.
