Three Regals Record Double-Digit Kills in Victory over Caltech

PASADENA, Calif. – Cal Lutheran women's volleyball (14-4, 7-3 SCIAC) took care of business on the road on Saturday, defeating Caltech (3-19, 0-11 SCIAC) in four sets. Kennedy Smith, Aby Tibesar, and Madeline Magnani all finished with double-digit kills in a balanced team effort, resulting in a 25-18, 22-25, 25-19, 25-16 victory.

Caltech got off to a fast start, winning the match's first four points and opening up an 8-3 lead. Magnani finally got the Regals going with a kill, and another from Kaylee Clayton tied it up at 14 all. The Beavers played feisty, taking an 18-16 lead soon after. Then, the Regals clamped down, going on a nine-point run to secure the opening set. The trio of Smith, Tibesar, and Magnani collected six kills during that stretch.

Cal Lutheran never saw a lead in the second set, but they tied it up multiple times throughout. Ties at 1-1, 18-18, and 22-22 represented a back-and-forth set, but the Beavers were able to use three-straight points down the stretch to knot the match at one set apiece.

Again in set three, Caltech took an early lead at 9-7 before the Regals settled in. Sandwiched by two kills from Olivia Fernandes, Cal Lutheran went on a 7-1 run to take a 14-10 lead. The pesky Beavers tied it at 17-17, but the Regals kept their composure behind a block assist (with Emily Ford) and a kill from Alex Hayes to take the set 25-19.

Caltech was hanging around in set four, down just one midway through the set. A kill and a pair of aces from Fernandes gave Cal Lutheran a comfortable lead before three-straight kills from Smith all but ended it for the Beavers. Kylee Grimm finished them off with a service ace, securing the match for the Regals.

Smith led Cal Lutheran with 14 kills (.325%). Adding three aces, 12 digs, and a block assist. Tibesar (.318%) and Magnani (.346%) each contributed 11 kills and two digs. Tibesar collected two solo blocks and one block assist, while Magnani registered three block assists.

Fernandes had a strong all-around performance with seven kills (.333%), two aces, and 12 digs. Hayes dropped in a pair of kills with three block assists and three digs.

Keegan Corley had another quality defensive match with a team-high 22 digs, adding six assists.

Continuing to rotate at setter, Grimm and Makenna Kawamura each tallied 22 assists. Grimm supplied four aces and eight digs while Kawamura provided three and 11, respectively.

Cal Lutheran moves to an impressive 7-3 in SCIAC and will host the top-ranked team in the country on Tuesday evening, looking to get revenge on a La Verne squad that it lost to in five sets on the road earlier this season.
