THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – Cal Lutheran women's volleyball (14-5, 7-4 SCIAC) hosted #1 La Verne (21-0, 12-0 SCIAC) on Tuesday evening but were unable to hand the Leopards their first loss of the season. La Verne took the match 25-17, 25-16, 25-16.
La Verne started off strong to gain an early lead in the opening set, but the Regals were able to keep things interesting after back-to-back kills by
Kaylee Clayton, her third and fourth of the match, cut the deficit to 20-16.
Aby Tibesar's third kill of the set made it 21-17, but the Leopards took the next four points to secure the set.
Cal Lutheran got off to a hot start in set two, opening a 9-5 lead fueled by three kills and a service ace from Clayton. La Verne quickly settled in, however, to capture the lead midway through the set and never looked back, winning the set 25-16.
Tarin Rueckert started off the third set with a couple of kills, but La Verne kept up their impressive play en route to another 25-16 set win, taking the match.
Clayton led the Regals with nine kills, adding an ace and seven digs.
Kennedy Smith recorded five kills and four digs. Rueckert and Tibesar each tallied four kills and a block assist.
Makenna Kawamura and
Kylee Grimm managed 12 and nine assists, respectively.
Keegan Corley kept up her stellar defense with 21 digs in just three sets, raising her digs/set to 5.96 and keeping her firmly in the top-10 in the nation in that category.
Cal Lutheran will look to rebound with a daytime match on the road at Redlands on Friday at 2pm.
