Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Tanaka’s Late Save Leads to Kingsmen 0-0 Draw vs La Verne

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – Cal Lutheran men's soccer (2-8-4, 1-4-4 SCIAC) played La Verne (6-6-4, 4-4-2 SCIAC) to a stalemate on Wednesday evening, each team going scoreless with quality defense and impressive goalkeeping on both sides. Isaak Tanaka's heroic save in the final minute kept the Leopards off the scoreboard and preserved the draw for the Kingsmen.

Cal Lutheran came out with aggression on offense, firing four shots in the match's first 14 minutes. None were able to hit the back of the net, including a Zach Mohr shot saved by the La Verne keeper.

The Kingsmen mustered only one more shot the rest of the opening half, and the Leopards totaled only two shots en route to a scoreless match heading into the break. Both defenses played an outstanding first 45 minutes.

Both offenses generated more pressure in the second, and the Kingsmen got off eight shots including another two on-goal by Mohr. Tanaka made four saves in the half, with his final one being the most important. In the 89th minute, a La Verne striker had a step on the Kingsmen defense up the left side and rocketed the ball towards the net when Tanaka got his hands on it to prevent a late blow from the Leopards.

Cal Lutheran outshot La Verne 13 to 8 (6 to 5 on-goal) in the match.

Mohr recorded a game-high four shots and three shots-on-goal. Tanaka made five total saves in his shutout.

The Kingsmen will remain at home for their fifth-straight game at Williams Rolland Stadium as Caltech visits on Saturday afternoon at 1pm. It will be Cal Lutheran's final home game of the regular season.
