THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – Cal Lutheran men's soccer (2-8-5, 1-4-5 SCIAC) hosted Caltech (7-8-1, 4-6-1 SCIAC) in an entertaining, high-octane offensive performance by both teams that led to a 3-3 draw. Three goals came off penalty kicks, and five of the six goals were scored in the final 20 minutes of the match.
In the 18th minute,
Danny Rodriguez sent a ball into the Caltech box, which
Kane Reese headed to a diving
Shaw Nishizawa in front of the net. Nishizawa took the shot, which was stopped by the hand of a Beavers' defender, resulting in a penalty shot for Cal Lutheran.
Reese calmly put the shot into the right side of goal as the keeper dove left, putting the Kingsmen up 1-0 early.
Isaak Tanaka made his second save of the afternoon with under a minute to play in the opening half, as a Caltech player tried to sneak a ball inside the post. Tanaka was able to get his gloves on it and keep Cal Lutheran's 1-0 advantage heading into the break.
Caltech managed to tie it at 1-1 in the 70th minute on a penalty kick.
Seven minutes later, the Beavers struck again to suddenly take the lead, 2-1.
Four minutes after that,
Gavin Arce drew a penalty up the right side in front of the Kingsmen bench which led to a free kick. Reese sent it over a crowd of defenders towards the opposite post, where
Jackson Smart touched it with his left foot. The ball went straight into a Caltech player's forearm, giving Cal Lutheran another chance at a penalty kick.
Like déjà vu, Reese knocked it into the bottom right corner of the net for his second score of the day and his sixth of the season, a team-high.
Less than two minutes after the Kingsmen tied it up, Caltech responded yet again to retake the lead 3-2 in the 83rd minute.
With under five minutes remaining,
Jack Gominiak received the ball on the back line of the Cal Lutheran defense. He sent in a long ball up the pitch with urgency and found a streaking
Noah Parks. Just outside the box, Parks headed the ball to a cutting
Dorian Darghali, who barely reached the ball before the Beavers' goalie. Darghali was able to punch it into the back of the net to tie the match again with a ridiculous fifth goal in less than 15 minutes of game time.
Neither team was able to get on the board in the final four-and-a-half minutes, resulting in Cal Lutheran's third draw in its last three games.
The Kingsmen took a hefty 33 shots in today's match. Tanaka ended with four saves, and Reese had the first multi-goal game of his career.
Cal Lutheran has two games left in 2025, both coming on the road. Next, it will take on Occidental on Wednesday evening at 7pm.
