Late Scores Lead Kingsmen to 1-1 Draw with Redlands

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – Cal Lutheran men's soccer (2-5-2, 1-2-2 SCIAC) hosted Redlands on Wednesday evening, with the match ending in a 1-1 tie. The game went scoreless for its first 80+ minutes until Redlands (3-5-2, 1-2-2) broke the stalemate in the 84th minute, to which Cal Lutheran quickly responded with a score in the 87th minute.

The Kingsmen started off as the aggressors, attempting the game's first four shots. Max Scott was responsible for two of those, both on goal and saved by the Bulldogs' keeper.

Caleb Merrill took his team's next couple shots later in the half as Cal Lutheran outshot Redlands 6-2 in the opening half. No shots were able to get past either goalie, so the match headed into the break knotted at 0-0.

The Bulldogs came out of halftime firing, as they took the half's first four shots this time. The Kingsmen regrouped and got some offense going led by Scott and Kane Reese. Both teams were trading possessions and attacks all half, and each team ended with 11 shots in the period.

Redlands was able to convert on a late corner kick in the 84th minute, putting Cal Lutheran under pressure with just a few minutes remaining. The Bulldogs almost got another one on an ensuing corner kick, but Isaak Tanaka made his fourth save of the second half and fifth of the match.

The Kingsmen then produced a counter attack, and a cross from the left side by Scott led to a Redlands own goal as the ball bounced into the net off a Bulldogs defender's chest. Gavin Arce was applying pressure on the play that led to the equalizer.

Time ran out shortly after, and the match ended in a draw after a wild final 10 minutes. Cal Lutheran outshot Redlands 17 to 13 and 9 to 6 on-goal.

Scott led the team with five shots, while Reese and Merrill each produced three.

Cal Lutheran will look for a win in its next match, a road affair with Caltech on Saturday morning at 11am.
