TEMPE, Ariz. – The Cal Lutheran women's water polo team attended the ASU Invitational in Tempe, Arizona to start its 2025 season.
On Saturday, the Regals took on two Division I opponents: 13th-ranked Arizona State and 15th-ranked UC Davis. Cal Lutheran was defeated in both matches to open the tournament.
No. 13 ARIZONA STATE 19, CAL LUTHERAN 6
The Regals dropped their first contest to start the campaign to #13 Arizona State University, 19-6.
They started out hot, leading the Sun Devils 4-2 halfway through the first quarter. From there, ASU took over and out-scored the Regals 17-2 the rest of the match.
Bethany Metcalfe led the way for Cal Lutheran with three goals and two steals, and
Hudson Geier chimed in with two assists.
No. 15 UC DAVIS 22, CAL LUTHERAN 4
In the Regals' second game of the day, they played #15 UC Davis and could not bounce back from their first loss, falling 22-4.
The Purple & Gold scored two goals in the second quarter, but it was not enough to overcome the Aggies eight.
Metcalfe continued her stellar day, adding two more goals and a steal to her name, while
Claire Daland had two goals and two steals.
The Regals will look to get back on track tomorrow against #23 San Diego State at 10:30 A.M. PST and in their battle against #25 California Baptist University at 2:15 P.M. PST.
