TEMPE, Ariz. – Cal Lutheran women's water polo continued its play in the ASU Invitational on Sunday morning.
The Regals played against two more ranked opponents in #23 San Diego State and #25 Cal Baptist. The Regals were bested in both matches.
No. 23 San Diego State 21, Cal Lutheran 7
In their first game of the day, the Regals fell to the 23rd-ranked San Diego State Aztecs, 21-7.
Cal Lutheran contained the Aztecs in the first period by only allowing two goals, but San Diego State eventually took over and scored nineteen goals the rest of the game to the Regals' seven.
Katie Knight and
Lauren Lohmeier each scored two goals while
Bethany Metcalfe,
Tori Portillo, and
Natalie Favazzo each slotted in a goal as well.
No. 25 Cal Baptist 16, Cal Lutheran 10
In a close tournament finale, the Regals fell short to 25th-ranked Cal Baptist, 16-10.
The game was knotted up at three a piece in the first period. The Lancers then kept the Regals goalless in the second period, while they scored four for a 7-3 lead. Cal Lutheran mounted a comeback in the third period with five goals but suffered defeat in the end.
Metcalfe remained dominant with four goals and one steal, and Knight had another multi-score game with three goals.
When asked about the weekend trip, Head Coach
Tim Settem said, "It was a tough weekend with some top competition. Yes, the results were not what we wanted, but considering our circumstances I thought we played well. Each game was a great leap forward."
The Regals dropped to 0-4 on the weekend. Cal Lutheran will look to rebound against Azusa Pacific at home on Saturday, February 1 at 9:00 A.M. PST.
