Kingsmen Hand No. 14 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps First Loss in Statement Victory

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - Cal Lutheran men's soccer upset No. 14 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in a 4-2 Kingsmen win at William Rolland Stadium on Wednesday evening.

After beginning their season undefeated, including a win over No. 1 preseason-ranked St. Olaf College, the Stags' impressive start to their season jolted them into the No. 14 spot in the rankings. Tonight, the Kingsmen (3-3-1) used a three-goal first half to hand the Stags (4-1-1) their first loss.

It took just two minutes before Joel Wollin scored the opening goal of the match as it was first shot, first goal for the Kingsmen. The offense continued to jump on their opportunities, earning a penalty just five minutes later, which JP Melgoza successfully converted into a goal. In just the eighth minute, the Kingsmen led 2-0.

In the 30th minute, Santiago Rivas made it three-nil with his first goal of the season, assisted by Caleb Merrill. Despite the Stags outshooting the Kingsmen 7-3, the three shots the Kingsmen took found the back of the net.

The Stags struck first in the second half, scoring in the 49th minute to make it a two-goal game. Dane Paulson had the answer, swinging the momentum back to the Kingsmen side with an unassisted goal to make it 4-1.

The Stags found their second goal in the 87th minute, but it was too little-too-late as the Kingsmen held it down for a statement win.

Gen Katashiba was in goal and made seven saves in the victory. The defensive corps of Merill, Jack Gominiak, and Jordan Becker gave 90-minute efforts on the back end.

The Kingsmen look to bolster this huge SCIAC win in their next matchup against La Verne. They go on the road to take on the Leopards on Saturday, Sept. 21 at 1 p.m.
