AUSTIN, TX - Cal Lutheran men's soccer fell to No. 21 Southwestern University 2-1 in the two teams' first matchup ever on Sunday morning.
The Kingsmen (2-3-1) kept the Pirates out of the net until the 31st minute, until sophomore defender Cooper Pero gave them a 1-0 lead. Michael Grimm had the assist. It would be another 28 minutes before anyone else scored, when junior defender Raghav Sharma extended the Pirates' lead to 2-0; Greyson Pinto had the assist.
Just six minutes later the Kingsmen were on the board, when sophomore midfielder Dane Paulson cut the Pirates' lead in half with an unassisted goal, making it a 2-1 game.
Southwestern outshot Cal Lu 21-7, while shots on goal also favored the Pirates 7-5. The Kingsmen were able to stay out of foul trouble, committing 12 to the Pirates' 14.
The Kingsmen outsaved Southwestern 5-4 behind goalkeeper Gen Katashiba.
The Kingsmen are back in Thousand Oaks when they begin SCIAC play against Claremont Mudd-Scripps on Wednesday, Sept. 18 at 7 p.m.
