THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — Emily Blank's go-ahead RBI and Ashlyn Flinchum's outing in the circle helped Cal Lutheran softball take down Redlands 4-3, getting the Regals one game closer to the SCIAC playoffs on Friday afternoon.
With the fourth seed in the SCIAC still up for grabs, the Regals (13-16, 10-9 SCIAC) took a crucial 1-0 series lead on Senior Day. Before the game, the Regals honored their graduating class of Blank, Ashley Membrere, Jamie Bingaman, Sachi Reyes, and Regan Laubscher.
With a 10-9 conference record, the Regals are now two games up on fifth-place Pomona-Pitzer, as the Sagehens fell in their game today, dropping to 8-11 in the conference.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bulldogs (28-10, 14-5 SCIAC) opened the contest with three runs off of Flinchum (W) in the first two innings, scoring once in the opening frame and twice in the second. Flinchum surrendered just one hit during that stretch but issued five free passes and hit a batter to give the Bulldogs scoring opportunities. But after the first two innings, Flinchum kept the Bulldogs off the scoreboard the rest of the way, getting the Regals out of jams time after time, including when the Bulldogs got the tying and go-ahead runs on base in the seventh inning.
Down 3-0 in the third inning, Olivia Vargas got the Regals on the board with an RBI single to score Reyna Perez from second. Jessica Waters and Danielle Diaz started the fourth with back-to-back singles, Brook DeSmet doubled to drive in a run, and Blank tied the game up at 3-3 with a single to drive in another.
After Flinchum posted a one-two-three top of the sixth inning to keep the game tied, DeSmet tallied her second double and third hit of the game to put a runner in scoring position with no outs. Then, in her last regular season home game, Blank delivered an RBI single to center field to give the Regals a 4-3 lead.
