Kingsmen Sweep Caltech, Second Straight SCIAC Opponent

PASADENA, Calif. — Cal Lutheran baseball swept its second straight SCIAC opponent as they defeated Caltech twice on Saturday. The Kingsmen won the first game 3-1 and the second 13-7. 

The Kigsmen improved to 19-6 overall and are now 10-5 in SCIAC play. They have three series left, with La Verne, Pomona-Pitzer, and Chapman as they make a final push for the SCIAC Tournament.  

GAME ONE – Kingsmen 3, Beavers 1
John Frazier picked up his seventh win, with just one loss, as he dominated the Beavers, pitching a complete game. In the 9.0 innings, he gave up nine hits and just one earned run. He recorded eight strikeouts with 12 groundouts and five flyouts. 

The offense did the rest as the Kingsmen scored first. Blake Wink singled to center field scoring Alec Garcia in the third, Lucas Danielwicz homered in the seventh, his third of the year, and Kai Caranto singled up the middle scoring Danielwicz in the ninth. 

GAME TWO – Kingsmen 13, Beavers 7
The Kingsmen got on the board first as Wink hit a homer in the top of the first. The Beavers responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning and took their first lead. The Kingsmen took the lead back in the second with three runs. Noah Matsumoto, Garcia, and Wink all recorded an RBI. The Kingsmen kept the runs coming as Danielwicz and Matsumoto added an RBI in the fifth.

The Beavers tried to keep up with the Kingsmen as they scored one run in the second, fifth, and sixth innings. The Kingsmen added two more runs in the sixth as Troy Anderson hit a RBI double and then scored on a wild pitch. The Kingsmen doubled up the Beavers 10-5 in the seventh as Josh Quinn hit a 2-RBI triple. Anderson made it 11-5 with a sacrifice fly in the same inning. The Beavers tried to get back in the game and scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth and made it 11-7. Griffin Zitko and Matsumoto both added an RBI in the ninth as the Kingsmen won the game. 

The Kingsmen used three pitchers in the win. Joshua Kim got the start and went 5.0 innings with five strikeouts. He gave up 10 hits and five earned runs. Frank Willius was next and went 2.0 innings. He allowed five hits, and one earned run while striking out four. Kyle Johnson continued the bullpen work and pitched the final 2.0 innings. He struck out one and gave up just one hit. 

The Kingsmen return home for a mid-week game and host Bethesda on Wednesday at 3 pm.
