ORANGE, Calif. — The offense scored five runs in the final two innings, Ashlyn Flinchum earned her ninth win of the season, and Cal Lutheran softball took the first game of its series against Chapman 7-2 on Friday afternoon.
The Regals' (11-13, 8-6 SCIAC) win today snapped a 12-game losing streak against the Panthers (20-11, 11-5 SCIAC) dating back to April 2, 2021. They improved to 8-6 in conference play and are in fourth place in the SCIAC behind the 11-5 Panthers.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After the Panthers struck first with two runs in the bottom of the first inning, Flinchum (W) settled in and dominated, allowing just one baserunner through the remaining six innings in her 11th complete game of the season.
In the top of the third, the Regals got on the board with two runs to tie the game up at 2-2. Nadia Collins was hit by a pitch, Reyna Perez walked, and with two outs, Olivia Vargas drove home both runners with a double to left field for her 10th and 11th RBIs of the season, the second-most of Regals hitters.
Flinchum sat down the Panthers in order in the third and fourth to keep the game tied before the Regals grabbed the lead in the sixth. Vargas tallied her third hit of the game with a single, and after Kali Strahm entered as a pinch-runner, Emily Blank tripled to the left-center gap to score Strahm and give the Regals a 3-2 lead.
Flinchum posted another one-two-three frame in the bottom half of the inning, and the Regals added four runs of insurance in the seventh. Danielle Diaz walked, Nadia Collins singled, and Brooke DeSmet drove in both runners with a triple. Jessica Waters kept it going with a double to drive in DeSmet and Casey Edwards added the cherry on top; an RBI single to cap off a four-run seventh inning. Flinchum got the final three outs smoothly in the bottom of the inning to secure the victory.
