THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — Jessica Waters homered in game two of her four-RBI day, but Cal Lutheran softball fell in both games of its doubleheader against Chapman on Saturday afternoon.
GAME ONE: Regals 2, Panthers 4
The Panthers (22-11, 13-6 SCIAC) brought seven batters to the plate and scored two runs in the opening frame, but Regals (11-15, 8-8 SCIAC) starter
Casey Edwards (L) settled in after her first inning, She kept the Panthers off the scoreboard for the next four innings, finishing with 5.0 IP and just one earned run on six hits and a walk.
The Regals were hitless until the fourth inning when
Danielle Diaz singled through the infield but did not scrape across any runs until the bottom of the seventh when the Panthers led 4-0 after they banked two extra insurance runs.
Reyna Perez and
Nadia Collins hit back-to-back singles with one out and Waters removed the zero on the scoreboard with a two-RBI single.
Olivia Vargas followed it up with a single of her own to put the tying run on first and get the winning run to the plate, but the Regals were unable to keep the rallying going.
THE NUMBERS
- Edwards (1-5): 5.0 IP, 6 H, 2 R (one earned), BB, HBP
- Vargas: 2-4, 2B

GAME TWO: Regals 3, Panthers 6
The Panthers jumped out to a 5-0 lead after three innings, but the Regals fought to get back within two in the fourth and fifth innings. Just like in game one, Waters was responsible for getting the Regals on the board; this time with a towering solo home run to left center field in the fourth inning, her team-leading seventh homer of the season.
The Regals cut the deficit to two runs in the fifth inning, as
Nadia Collins singled with two outs and
Brooke DeSmet drove her in with an RBI triple. Then, Waters tallied her fourth RBI of the day, knocking in DeSmet with a single to make it 5-3.
Just when the Regals turned the tide, the Panthers stifled the momentum with a run in the sixth inning and the Regals went down in order for the last six outs of the game.
Ashlyn Flinchum (L) lasted 3.0 innings before
Ava Tepesano took over. Tepesano held the Panthers to just one run through 4.0 innings in relief.
