CLAREMONT, Calif. — The Regals got two quality starting pitching performances from Ava Tepesano and Ashlyn Flinchum to lead Cal Lutheran softball to a split of its doubleheader against Pomona-Pitzer, winning the final game of the series to avoid the sweep on Saturday afternoon.
The Regals (15-17, 7-8 SCIAC) currently sit in fourth in the SCIAC standings with eight games left to play in the season.
GAME ONE: Regals 3, Sagehens 7
Tepesano pitched three scoreless innings before surrendering the game's first run to the Sagehens in the bottom of the fourth. The Regals (10-13, 7-6 SCIAC) answered in the fifth thanks to Emily Blank's solo home run to left field, her first of the season and second of her collegiate career. Brooke DeSmet doubled the next batter, and Reyna Perez followed it up with a double of her own to drive in DeSmet and give the Regals a 2-1 lead.
Tepesano was relieved by Casey Edwards (L) in the fifth inning, where the Sagehens put up two runs to retake the lead 3-2. In the top of the sixth, Olivia Vargas hit her first home run of the season to tie the game at 3-3, but the Sagehens scored four runs in the bottom of the inning to make it 7-3, where the score would remain.
GAME TWO: Regals 3, Sagehens 1
After taking the loss in the circle in game one of the series on Friday, Flinchum (W) made the start and bounced back in game three, pitching her 10th complete game to earn her eighth win of the season.
In the top of the second, Ahlyssa Guzman doubled to the right-center gap and, after advancing to third, scored thanks to a Sagehens infield error. Flinchum struck out the side in the second and posted scoreless innings until the fifth when the Sagehens pushed across their lone run to tie the game at 1-1.
After Vargas singled to lead off the sixth inning, Mia Antonino reached after grounding into a fielder's choice. Jamie Bingaman worked a walk to put runners on second and third, and pinch-hitter Abby Strong delivered the game's key hit off the bench: a double to score both runners and give the Regals a 3-1 lead late. Flinchum retired the Sagehens in order in the sixth and stranded the tying and winning runs on base in the seventh to seal the victory.
