THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — Sebastian Smith's walk-off single in the 10th inning lifted Cal Lutheran baseball to a 5-4 win over No. 14-ranked Pomona-Pitzer on Friday afternoon.
After winning the series against La Verne last weekend, Kingsmen (24-7, 13-6 SCIAC), battled a top 25 ranked SCIAC team for the second series in a row. Smith's only hit of the game couldn't have come at a better time as the Kingsmen took game one of a key series and stayed hot, improving to 12-1 in their last 13 games. The Kingsmen are third in the SCIAC, less than two games behind the Leopards, who sit atop the standings, and the Sagehens (23-9, 11-5 SCIAC), who are in second place.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After getting the last two outs of the top of the ninth inning, Kyle Johnson (W) took the mound and pitched a scoreless 10th inning to keep the score knotted at 4-4. Blake Wink was hit by a pitch to lead off the Kingsmen's half of the 10th, reaching first as the walk-off run. Kai Caranto's sacrifice bunt advanced Wink into scoring position and Troy Anderson was intentionally walked to bring up Smith. With two outs, Smith smoked a ground ball just out of reach of the diving Sagehen second baseman to score Wink and the Kingsmen dugout stormed the field to celebrate the extra-inning win.
Luke Wechsler was the starting pitcher for the Kingsmen and was excellent despite the no-decision. He gave the Kingsmen 7.2 strong innings, allowing four runs on seven hits and a walk while racking up seven K's.
The contest was a back-and-forth affair that started when Anderson got the Kingsmen on the board in the first inning with an RBI groundout to score Lucas Danielewicz, who reached with a double. Danielewicz and Wink both scored in the third inning to quickly make it 3-0 Kingsmen, but the Sagehens answered after scoring in the fourth and fifth innings to tie the game up at 3-3.
Josh Quinn doubled to lead off the seventh inning, advanced to third on a passed ball, and Ethan Dungo singled to retake the lead before the Sagehens tied the game up once again in the eighth.
