CLAREMONT, Calif. — Cal Lutheran baseball battled for 14 innings after dropping game one of its doubleheader against No. 14 Pomona-Pitzer, but ultimately fell in both games against the Sagehens on Saturday afternoon.
GAME ONE: Kingsmen 2, Sagehens 11
Making his 10th start of the season, John Frazier (L) pitched three scoreless innings before the Sagehens (25-9, 13-5 SCIAC) put up three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to jump out to a 3-0 lead. Frazier bounced back with a one-two-three fifth, and the Kingsmen (24-9, 13-8 SCIAC) got on the board in the sixth inning. Blake Wink led off the frame with a single, Kai Caranto walked, and Troy Anderson smashed a two-run double, scoring both runners to make it a one-run game.
Frazier pitched a scoreless bottom of the sixth to keep the Kingsmen within one, but the Sagehens capitalized with bases loaded in the seventh, breaking the game open with a grand slam and adding four more runs down the stretch to run away with the win.
GAME TWO: Kingsmen 8, Sagehens 9 (F/14)
The Kingsmen were outlasted in an extra-inning thriller that took over four hours to decide a victor. Joshua Kim made the start for the Kingsmen, and they led 7-2 until the Sagehens came from behind with three runs in the seventh and two in the eighth to tie it up.
Frank Willius (L) entered the game out of the bullpen with two outs in the eighth inning and was excellent as an inning-eater for the Kingsmen, going 6.0 innings while racking up nine strikeouts.
Still seeking that elusive extra-inning run, Josh Quinn singled to lead off the top of the 14th inning. Then, Alec Garcia doubled for his fifth hit of the day to put runners on second and third, and after Blake Wink was intentionally walked, Kai Caranto sent a fly ball to right field deep enough to score Quinn and give the Kingsmen an 8-7 lead.
Stranding runners on base in the 14th would come back to haunt the Kingsmen, as an error and a walk all of a sudden put the walk-off run on base for the Sagehens. Another walk loaded the bases with one out, and a single through the five-six hole was enough to bring two runs home, in almost a mirror image of Sebastian Smith's walk-off for the Kingsmen in game one on Friday.
