THOUSAND OAKS, Calif — John Frazier went 7.0 innings and surrendered just one run to lead Cal Lutheran baseball to a 4-2 victory over No. 20 Cortland on Saturday afternoon, securing the series win against the Red Dragons.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Frazier (3-1) put up zeros through his first five innings of work, getting one-two-three innings in the second and third and working his way out of the trouble when the Red Dragons (4-6) threatened in the first, fourth, and fifth innings.
The Kingsmen (8-3, 3-3 SCIAC) struck first in the bottom of the first inning. Kai Caranto knocked in Josh Quinn with a sacrifice fly for his 10th RBI of the year, the second-most on the team.
It was a pitching duel throughout, as both pitchers kept the offenses scoreless for the next four innings. The Red Dragons tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the sixth but the Kingsmen regained momentum after first-year catcher Eric Gonzalez threw out a stealing runner for the final out of the top of the seventh inning.
Alec Garcia and Gordon Richardson both doubled in the bottom of the seventh and with two outs, Blake Wink got a clutch single to score both runners and make it 3-1 Kingsmen.
Frank Willius relieved Frazier in the eighth inning and surrendered one run, but limited damage and kept the lead, ending the inning with an emphatic strikeout. In the home half of the inning, Lucas Danielewicz was hit by a pitch to start the inning, Troy Anderson advanced him to third with a single, and Sebastian Smith hit an RBI single to get a huge insurance run and make it 4-2.
Joshua Kim picked up his second save of the season, closing out the ninth inning cleanly to secure the win.
