THOUSAND OAKS, Calif — Josh Quinn, Kai Caranto, and Troy Anderson each capped off three-hit games by coming up huge for Cal Lutheran baseball in the ninth inning as the Kingsmen walked off No. 20 Cortland 6-5 to sweep the three-game series on Sunday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing 5-4 in the bottom of the ninth, Quinn doubled to lead off the inning, his second double and third hit of the game. Blake Wink was a productive out, advancing Quinn to third with a groundout to the third basemen, which proved to be clutch as Quinn then scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at 5-5.
Now with the bases empty, Kai Caranto kept the Kingsmen (9-3) rally going with a one-out single. Caranto and Lucas Danielewicz switched places as Danielewicz reached on a fielder's choice, and with two outs, Troy Anderson singled to advance Danielewicz to third base. Sebastian Smith was intentionally walked after Anderson stole second, but it wouldn't matter as Danielewicz scored the walk-off run thanks to another wild pitch by the Red Dragons (4-7).
Pitchers Kyle Johnson (1-0) and Oscar Lopez were crucial in keeping the score close to set up the Kingsmen's comeback, as they combined for 7.0 innings of work and just two runs (one earned) out of the bullpen.
The Kingsmen started fast, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning, as Caranto, Danielewicz, and Smith all drove in runs. The Red Dragons scored three runs in the first two innings off of starting pitcher Milan Bugarin to tie the game and scored another two runs in the third to establish their lead that they would hold until the Kingsmen walk-off.
