CLAREMONT, Calif. — Hoping to mount a late comeback, Cal Lutheran baseball put up two runs in the eighth inning but ultimately fell to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 5-3 on Friday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Stags (13-2, 2-2 SCIAC) controlled on the scoreboard after a three-spot in the bottom of the sixth inning to put them up 5-1. Starting pitcher Luke Wechsler (2-3) took the decision loss through 5.1 innings of work.
After the Stags scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning, the Kingsmen (9-4, 3-4 SCIAC) got on the board in the second thanks to Noah Matsumoto's RBI groundout to score Troy Anderson, who doubled to lead off the inning.
Down 5-1, the Kingsmen showed resilience by threatening in the eighth inning. With two outs, Lucas Danielewicz singled and Anderson smacked his second double of the game. With runners on second and third, Sebastian Smith singled to drive in both runners, recording his 10th and 11th RBIs of the year.
Michael Smith put up 2.2 no-hit innings out of the bullpen to keep the game within reach down the stretch.
