Kingsmen Score Eight Runs in Middle Innings, Take Down No. 20 Cortland

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — The Kingsmen offense scored eight runs in the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings, starting pitcher Luke Wechsler threw 6.0 innings of two-run ball, and Cal Lutheran baseball took game one of its series against No. 20 Cortland 10-4 on Friday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
After the Red Dragons (4-5) jumped ahead 2-0, the Kingsmen (7-4, 2-4 SCIAC) got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning. Kai Caranto worked a two-out walk, Lucas Danielewicz singled (extending his hit streak to 10 games), and Caranto scored on an error after getting to third.

Wechsler (2-2) picked up his second win of the season in a stellar outing. He struck out seven through 6.0 innings of work, keeping the Red Dragons off the board after they scored in the third inning.

The Kingsmen put up big innings in the fifth and sixth to secure the victory. With runners on first and second, Gordon Richardson drove in Sebastian Smith to tie the game at 2-2, his eighth RBI of the season. Josh Quinn walked to load the bases, Blake Wink gave the Kingsmen the lead with a two-RBI single, and the Kingsmen pushed across one more thanks to an error.

Now leading 5-2, Wechsler got a quick three outs in the top of the sixth to keep the momentum on the Kingsmen's side, and the offense put up four more runs in the home half of the inning to break the game open. Troy Anderson and Smith opened up the inning with back-to-back singles and Carlos Vega drove in Anderson to make it 6-2. Then, Smith scored on a balk called on the Red Dragons, Quinn drove in Vegas with a sacrifice fly, and Wink drove in his third run of the game with a single.

After Wechsler, the Kingsmen used the combined efforts of Kyle Johnson, Cameron Cooper, Michael Smith, and Joshua Kim to get the last nine outs of the game.
