Game Recap: Women's Water Polo |

Regals Knock Off Poets in Overtime

WHITTIER, Calif. — Katie Knight scored five goals, including two in overtime, to lead Cal Lutheran women's water polo past the Whittier Poets 11-9 on Wednesday night.

"This was a great game for us to build off of," Head Coach Tim Settem said. "Going down early and having to climb back in the game, then taking it over time, was quite the challenge. Our perseverance really showed through in the overtime periods and we finally took control. Whittier gave us everything they had, luckily it didn't take us too long to get our act together!"

The Regals were down 4-1 after the first quarter and had some work to do to get back in the game. The Regals outscored the Poets 2-1 in the second and third quarters and trailed 6-5 with one quarter left. Cal Lutheran took an 8-7 lead in the fourth quarter but Whittier scored the equalizer as time expired.

The game went to overtime and the Regals shut out the Poets 2-0 in the opening frame. Jacsen Donohue and Knight delivered the goals. The teams exchanged points in the second overtime period as the Regals improved to 2-4 in SCIAC and 5-16 overall.

Knight led the way with five goals, Donohue was next with three, and Bethany Metcalfe, Tori Portillo, and Jacqueline Brandon each added one. Sophie Raquel was in the cage and made 10 saves and got the win.

The offense moved the ball around well and had eight assists on the 11 goals. Donohue and Metcalfe had two each while four more Regals had one.

The Regals look to start a winning streak, and make a SCIAC Tournament push, as they host Occidental on Saturday at 11 am.
