THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — Josie Oparanaku scored five goals and Sydney Shin had four more but Cal Lutheran women's lacrosse was outlasted by the Whitworth Pirates 17-14 on Wednesday night.
The Regals battled and showed resilience, as they found themselves in an early hole but clawed their way back. Whitworth scored the first five points of the game as the Regals responded. Cal Lutheran scored two goals to end the quarter and kept the points coming in the second.
The Regals used a 7-1 run and took their first lead of 7-6 with 4:44 left in the half. The teams exchanged goals over the rest of the half and the game was tied 8-8 at the half. The ties and lead changes kept coming as Whitworth went 12-9 in the third. The Regals responded and made it 12-12 with 2:25 remaining in the quarter. The Pirates fired back and led 15-12 with 10:51 left. The Regals came right back with back-to-back goals and made it a one-point game with 7:18 to go. That was as close as the Regals would get as the Pirates scored the last two points and took the game.
After Oparanaku and Shin, Malina Diaz was next with two goals. Madison Soforenko was all over the field with five ground balls and Kaitlyn Gill was next with four. Soforenko and Shin led the way with four draw controls. Bella Bravo was in goal and made 11 saves.
